4 out of 5 stars Good product, but should come with latest firmware   January 8, 2009
I would have given it 5 stars if the player would have come with the latest firmware. Updating via the network connection did not work, so I tried to update via the USB port which did not work either. Eventually I was able to get the firmware updated via CD. After that, updating via the network still did not work, nor did Netflix.

Product support was nice, but could not help. 'must be a security setting'. They promised to call me back in a few days.

One hour later, I found out that for some reason the DNS server in my network could not handle LG (it handles all other internet connections fine). After that I changed the DNS server, all worked fine and as expected.

Great picture and sound quality as well as intuitive menus. Some more network debugging information in the network settings would be useful and would have saved me (and LG) a lot of time.

Overall: nice product, would buy again.

5 out of 5 stars Great combo   January 8, 2009
This LG unit is awesome. It is a terrific DVD and Blu-Ray player with all of the specs you could want including Profile 2.0 (BD-Live) at a reasonable price on Amazon. I am thrilled with the Netflix performance picture looks great, the controls a snap to use and I am saving a ton of money by renting DVDsand Blu-ray titles.

The player has a USB slot for loading photos or songs as well as BD-Live content. You need to have at least a 1 GB USB stick. You should also plan on buying an HDMI cable since the unit only comes with component cables.

My experience with LG has been so positive I plan to consider LG for future purchases along their entire product line.

4 out of 5 stars Blu Ray Player   January 8, 2009
The player was a Christmas gift for my husband. He had it hooked up in about 1 hour out of the box to the flat screen on the bedroom wall. He seems to think the blu ray discs have a much superior picture quality. I also gave him a subsciption to Netflix because of the ability of this player to download movies and play instantly. We have not completed that part of the installation yet. The many buttons on the remote have some functions that we have yet to find or figure out. (Reading the manuals would probably help.) This player was a little more expensive than some of the other blu ray players, but I wanted the feature of downloading movies instantly. (Tired of the premium movie channels with nothing to watch.) I almost bought a PS3 instead of this player which may be a better choice for those who like games.

4 out of 5 stars Solid and Dependable   January 6, 2009
I been using this unit for the past several months and would highly recommend it. While I've not owned other Blu-Ray players, I have been impressed with the solid build quality and fast start-up (comparied to a friends unit). I especially like the ability to stream NetFlix movies...and hope that more updates to the firmware reveil future integrations to other VOD services (i.e. Roku planning to integrate Amazon's HD VOD services) to this unit as well.

I didn't give it five stars because of the shortage of internal memory for BD-Live content, which is sometimes available for newer Blu-Ray disks. This unit requires you to put a flash USB drive (1 Gb -inexpensive) in the front - LG, next time put one in the back so you don't ruin your beautiful, sleek design.

5 out of 5 stars USB Functionality?   January 2, 2009

I would be interested to hear from any BD300 owners regarding the functionality of the USB port and Media files.

Some of the LG press releases I've seen clearly state that media files (d-pix, MP3/music, and VIDEO) can be played from an attached USB drive... though they state FLASH/thumb-drives.

I'd be interested in knowing if the VIDEO part is true, and (if anyone's willing to experiment) what common CODEC's and file types are supported... such as DVD "ISO" files, MPG2 video, VOB, DivX or XviD, MKV, etc.

I'd like to think the Engineers (or more likely, Marketing guys who drive the Engineering departments) were thinking at least a LITTLE bit when it was being designed. I have hoped to find a BD player that can play full resolution "rips" of my BD and DVD discs. I would use an external multi-TB USB drive array, sitting near the player. This way I can leave the original disc nearly "untouched" in my library (already have over 250 DVD's), needed only if/when the USB drive dies or if I want to use the movie off-site.
