Review January 9, 2009 This television's picture is incredible. I have been buying Samsung TVs for the the last 5 years at the rate of about one every year and a half. Each generation has been better than the last, but the jump in quality on this generation is "leaps and bounds" above the previous.
The built in speakers are only par, and i would recommend using your HT or even your stereo instead. This really isnt a negative comment, as every LCD or plasma i have ever auditioned has poor audio, nor would I want to pay extra $$$ for better built in speakers when I would be using HT audio anyway. Samsung has done a fantastic job of putting the money into what you should be looking for in a TV, PICTURE QUALITY
the only negative i have is that i dont like the red light that "glows" at the bottom of the tv when it is on. I find any type of LED or light source at the front of the room as a distraction, and I have had to put a piece of black electrical tape over it, which does the job of hiding it quite well and is not very noticable. Samsung should put an option in the setup menu to disable that light. This red light is at least better than the previous generation that had a blue glowing light in the same place. though red is less noticable and annoying than blue, I would prefer zero glowing things in my line of vision, expecially directly under my screen.
If you buy this tv, you will NOT be dissappointed.
The remaining section applies to those very few of you that have centralized A/V distribution systems like mine (AVAtrix Matrix distribution)
if you are using IR transmitters, all plasma and LCD TV's put of IR noise, your IR reciever in the room must adjust to the ambient level of IR before it can pass through your IR remote correctly.
with my first samsung (50" plasma) it would take about 5 minutes to adjust to ambient IR level
with my next samsung 52" (LCD) it would take about 2-3 minutes to adjust to ambient level,
this tv takes about ten minutes.
I am using Niles IR Recievers which are supposed to be "plasma proof" perhaps I need to find a (new /next gen) IR reciever to go with this TV.
Extremely pleased January 9, 2009 Nicest picture i've seen on an LCD for this price. No problems with clouding and am happy to say the remote works just fine (comcast HDDVR). And how thin it is...WOW! It actually looks pretty mounted on the wall. I bought this as a gift and was a bit nervous about buying something like this online, but I couldn't be happier with having purchased it through Amazon. The money I saved was well worth the decision. It was delivered with no problems and the delivery (CEVA) guys showed up exactly at the time we had set up. I am certainly going to buy a Samsung for myself and will look to Amazon for the purchase.
best picture besides a plasma January 8, 2009 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
I am ready to pull the trigger on this one as I have been standing in BB too long and checking this LCD out against the other brands. I care less about the remote problems as this will hang on a bedroom wall.
Samsung LN52A850 January 6, 2009 Possibly the best quality 52" LCD flat screen on the market for the price. Delivery was fast and courteous. Out of box setup was easy with plug and play. Using Direct/TV with the HD channels, the picutre quality is superior, and with Blueray, it is crystal clear. If you don't want to go to the theater, this is the next best thing. Coming from a 50" Samsung DLP to this has been a lot of fun.
I love it! January 6, 2009 The 850 is my second Samsung HDTV, and I'm really glad I chose it over something from the XBR range. The colors are incredibly vibrant and the 120Hz refresh rate really does make a difference. I played around with the refresh settings to see if there was any noticeable video noise when it was set to maximum. Despite hearing that this was a problem, I didn't notice any noise at all.
Playing Blu-ray discs produces almost unbelievably clear images. I put The Fifth Element on and it really did look like a whole different film than what I remembered. PS3 games look really great too.
The built-in speakers are not as bad as some people are making them out to be, but they could be better. Playing around with the equalizer helps tremendously. I sourced my sound through a home theater system and I suspect most people who buy the 850 will be doing the same, so this complaint is probably minor. It's a fantastic set and a good value for the performance.
